KAMPALA, Uganda — The High Court in Kampala has sentenced Abbas Musa Buvumbo and Hajara Nakandi to death for their roles in the kidnap and murder of businesswoman Susan Magara.

The verdict marks a major development in one of Uganda’s most closely followed kidnapping and murder cases, which dates back to 2018.

Two Get Death Penalty

Justice Alex Mackay Ajiji handed the death sentences to Buvumbo and Nakandi after the court found their involvement in the abduction, detention and killing of Magara warranted the maximum punishment.

The court considered the circumstances surrounding the crime and the roles played by the two convicts before imposing the sentences.

Seven Others Sentenced to Life

The High Court also sentenced seven other convicts to life imprisonment for their involvement in the kidnapping and murder.

The seven are:

  • Yusuf Lubega
  • Mahad Kisalita
  • Ismail Bukenya
  • Muzamir Ssali
  • Abubaker Kyewolwa
  • Hassan Wasswa
  • Hussein Kato Miiro

The court assessed the individual roles of the convicts before determining the appropriate sentences.

Susan Magara Murder Shocked Uganda

Susan Magara was kidnapped in 2018, in a case that generated widespread public concern across Uganda.

Her kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom from her family following her abduction. She was later found dead, turning the incident into a high-profile murder investigation.

The case remained before the courts for years as authorities pursued those accused of participating in the crime.

Court Delivers Long-Awaited Verdict

The sentencing represents a major milestone in the case and provides a significant development for Magara’s family, who have waited years for the conclusion of the prosecution.

The convictions and sentences also highlight the seriousness with which Ugandan courts treat crimes involving kidnapping, ransom demands and murder.

However, the legal process may continue if the convicted persons exercise their right to appeal.
