Panic in Prison as Lukwago Reportedly Suffers Nightmares After Seeing Dead Bodies in Hospital

KAMPALA, UGANDA — Concerns have emerged over the wellbeing of detained lawyer and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, following reports that he has been experiencing disturbing nightmares after allegedly seeing dead bodies in hospital corridors.

According to reports circulating about Lukwago’s condition, the former Lord Mayor has been struggling to sleep after witnessing distressing scenes involving deceased patients while receiving medical attention. The reports claim that the experience has continued to affect him while in detention.

The allegations have renewed concerns about Lukwago’s physical and psychological wellbeing as he remains in custody.

Lukwago’s Health Raises Concern

Reports concerning Lukwago’s health have emerged amid growing attention to his treatment while detained. Social media posts and reports have claimed that his health has deteriorated and that he has experienced significant mental distress, including nightmares and difficulty sleeping.

The claims come at a time when Lukwago’s detention has attracted public attention because of his role as a lawyer representing opposition figures.

Lukwago was detained after being accused of failing to report alleged acts of treason. His detention has also affected the legal proceedings involving opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, whose trial has continued amid concerns over access to his preferred legal representation.

Reports of Disturbing Hospital Experience

The latest reports allege that Lukwago became deeply distressed after seeing dead bodies being taken through hospital corridors.

The experience is reportedly behind the nightmares that have made it difficult for him to sleep. However, the specific circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, including the hospital involved and the number of bodies reportedly seen, have not been independently established.

The claims should therefore be treated with caution until confirmed by Lukwago’s family, lawyers, prison authorities or medical professionals directly involved in his care.

Growing Attention to Lukwago’s Condition

Lukwago’s health has already become a subject of public concern, with reports indicating that medical professionals and rights activists have raised questions about his condition while in custody. NBS has also reported concerns from medical experts over the health of the detained lawyer.

Other reports have claimed that Lukwago was transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

The developments have increased calls for authorities to ensure that the former Lord Mayor receives appropriate medical care while his legal case continues.

Lukwago’s Role in Besigye’s Case

Lukwago has been a prominent member of the legal team involved in the case against Kizza Besigye. His detention became particularly significant after Besigye’s treason proceedings continued without the lawyers of his choice.

On July 29, 2026, Besigye collapsed during a High Court session in Kampala and was subsequently taken to hospital. The Associated Press reported that Besigye was later unconscious in intensive care at Mulago Hospital, according to his wife, Winnie Byanyima.

The developments have intensified public scrutiny of the treatment of both Besigye and Lukwago.

Calls for Clarity Over Lukwago’s Health

As reports about Lukwago’s alleged nightmares and deteriorating health continue to circulate, there are growing calls for clear and credible information about his medical condition.

Any confirmation regarding his health should ideally come from his medical team, family, lawyers or relevant authorities rather than unverified social media reports.

For now, the reports of nightmares involving dead bodies remain allegations, but they have added to wider concerns surrounding Lukwago’s wellbeing while in detention.
