A British human rights law student who fell in love with a Texas death row inmate has spoken about the heartbreaking experience of marrying him just two weeks before his execution and then watching him die.
Tiana Krasniqi, 31, first contacted Texas death row inmate James Broadnax in 2024 while conducting academic research into racism and the death penalty.
What began as a formal conversation for her studies eventually developed into a close friendship and later a romantic relationship.
Despite the thousands of miles separating them and the prison walls between them, Tiana said she fell deeply in love with Broadnax.
The couple eventually married just two weeks before his execution in April 2026.
Tiana Krasniqi Contacted James Broadnax for Research
Tiana was studying for a master’s degree in international human rights law when she first reached out to Broadnax.
At the time, she was researching the impact of racism on the application of the death penalty in the United States.
Broadnax, who was 37, had been sentenced to death after being convicted alongside his cousin in connection with the murders of two men during a robbery around two decades earlier.
According to reports about the case, Broadnax’s conviction remained controversial, with questions raised about his confession, jury selection and the evidence presented against him.
Friendship Turned Into Love
As Tiana and James continued communicating, their relationship gradually became more personal.
The pair reportedly spent hours speaking on the phone and sharing details about their childhoods and personal experiences.
Several months after their first conversations, Broadnax asked Tiana to become his girlfriend.
She later travelled from the United Kingdom to Texas to visit him in prison.
Their visits were heavily restricted, with the couple separated by prison glass.
Despite the unusual circumstances, Tiana said their relationship continued to grow stronger.
Questions Raised Over James Broadnax’s Conviction
While visiting Texas and researching Broadnax’s case, Tiana began reviewing court documents and evidence connected to the murders.
She said she discovered information indicating that Broadnax’s DNA had not been found on the victims or on the murder weapon.
Reports also indicated that DNA belonging to his cousin, Demarius Cummings, was allegedly connected to evidence in the case.
Broadnax’s case also attracted controversy over claims surrounding the circumstances of his confession and allegations concerning racial bias during jury selection.
Ahead of the execution, Cummings reportedly signed a statement taking responsibility for the killings and claiming that he had acted alone.
However, Broadnax’s legal appeals were unsuccessful.
Petition Gathered Thousands of Signatures
Determined to stop the execution, Tiana launched a campaign calling for Broadnax to be granted a reprieve.
Her petition reportedly received around 88,000 signatures.
The case also attracted support from campaigners and high-profile figures, including rappers Travis Scott and Young Thug, who backed efforts to halt the execution.
Despite the growing campaign and last-minute appeals, the courts rejected Broadnax’s attempts to stop the execution.
Couple Married Just Two Weeks Before Execution
With Broadnax’s execution date approaching, the couple decided to get married.
Tiana travelled to Texas and wore a simple white dress for the ceremony.
However, their wedding was far from traditional.
Broadnax remained behind a glass partition during the ceremony, and the newlyweds were reportedly not allowed to physically kiss.
The emotional ceremony lasted only a short time before Tiana was forced to leave and return to her hotel alone.
Just two weeks later, she would face the devastating experience of watching her husband being executed.
Tiana Watched Her Husband Die
On April 30, 2026, Broadnax was taken to the execution chamber.
Tiana was present and watched from behind a glass barrier as her husband was put to death by lethal injection.
She later described the experience as traumatic and heartbreaking.
According to her account, Broadnax continued to insist that he was innocent before the execution.
Tiana said she shouted that she loved him as the execution was carried out.
She said the experience left her deeply traumatised and heartbroken.
Determined to Continue Fighting for His Name
Although Broadnax was executed, Tiana says her fight is not over.
She remains convinced that her husband was wrongfully executed and has vowed to continue campaigning to clear his name.
The tragic story has attracted widespread attention because of the unusual love story, the controversy surrounding Broadnax’s conviction and the questions raised by his supporters about the evidence in the case.
Tiana says losing her husband after such a short marriage has been devastating, but she remains determined to continue fighting for what she believes is the truth.
